avios surcharges

Just found an interesting loophole in booking an avios award

Going MAA-HKG-JFK on cathay (first leg biz, second in first)

If I booked the entire route on BA.com, it came out with 2300$ surcharge!!!

In separate bookings, it works out to 300$ for the first and 60$ for the second!!

I assume this is because of hong kongs rule against fuel surcharges (which is soon disappearing).

But wouldn't that also apply to connecting flights on same booking?

You're probably right. $2300 is RIDICULOUS

This is super common with BA, and I have no idea why their system prices things in this bonkers way. It's often better to book separate tickets for this exact reason.
