Can you book South African Airways from JNB-IAD (with a stop in Dakar) on two separate reservations

Am trying to get back from JNB (Johannesburg) to IAD (Washington).

There is availability on the date I am looking for from DSS (Dakar) to IAD on South African in business. However, there is no availability on the same flight from JNB to DSS, so was thinking of booking that ticket in economy with cash.

Is it possible to make two separate reservations for the same flight? The plane only has a bit over an hour on the ground in Dakar. Would I have to get off, go through security, and reboard the plane, or would could I just stay on (even though there would be two separate bookings)? Also, is 1 hour 10 mins or so enough time to connect in Dakar should I have to do that?

You would have to get off the plane, collect your luggage, clear Customs and enter the country then check your luggage, go through Immigration and security. I would not think that would be enough time.
