Expiring systemwide upgrades on American

I've tried to use my 4 upgrades on every international flight for the past year, but it was one big tease after another. What is the trick to actually getting one of these? Can they be extended beyond the January expiration date? I'm going to have 8 soon, but WTF? if you can't use them.

It can't hurt to ask if AA will extend the expiration, but anecdotally very few people (CK's maybe) are granted an extension.

Do you mind me asking on what routes you've tried using them? I am 3 for 4 right now, with another trip coming up this week with the SWU used for the overnight flight.

As a point of reference, we in Miami, have always been able to upgrade our SWUs to Europe. (Our 4 each were gone before July1st.)
We rarely get a confirmed upgrade at purchase but get the all-clear one day or so prior to departure.
We make sure we choose a wide-body with plenty of available front cabin seats at time of booking.
