In small airports

A friend who travels a lot for work told me that in small airports the passangers who sit near the gate are concidered to be already in line, so when the actual line is formed, they can just join in the line from the sides of it and simply merge into the line. I told him that it sounds like cutting in line, but he said he saw it happens many times and no one got upset over it. Have you ever encountered this?

I think it depends. In a small airport there's probably not a lot of people getting on the same flight so it's not a huge difference. People might be much nicer as well

In a larger airport where it could be hundreds of people boarding a flight and wanting overheard space, people might say something.
