This seems to be possible. My question is can I pay for the Taxes and Fees with my Citi Prestige, in order to get the lowest threshold for Delay Coverage, then use my AMEX Platinum for the fare to get the biggest 5x bang for the buck?

I'm guessing there's a problem with this since I can't find anyone advocating it.

It's rare that an airline has the option to pay with two cards - I dont recall seeing it recently. Some OTAs might but I think it's also rare.

Also with the exception of award tickets I think credit cards require the full fare be paid with the card for protection to kick in.

You could purchase a gift card for whatever airline you are flying with your AMEX, and then use that to cover a portion. Then pay the difference on Prestige.

I'd still check the terms of coverage for the credit card that you are using. I'm pretty sure that they require the entire cost be put on the card.
