Planning a trip with our 11 year old who is a great traveler. We are torn between a major chain hotel or a local boutique hotel. We want the local experience but the chain seems more predictable but more expensive. Thought? Recommendations?

Rome is a market where high-end chain-hotels aren't in the same league as in some other big cities. Unless you need the elite nights or points I would suggest shopping around, as there are some lovely local (boutique) hotels.

Also, make sure your hotel allows 3 people in a room. Lots of hotels outside the US don't!

I stay in Rome four times a year and usually stay at the Hotel Condotti a 4 Star near the Spanish Steps. You can get the junior suite, which should work nicely for a couple and child for around $175/night if that fits into your budget.

The problem with European hotels is that they are usually a bit cramped unless you go 4 Star or higher.
