So I’ve noticed something curious. When you book a hotel through the SPG app, in room preferences there is an option “Request upgrade, please”. This option does not exist in the full website of SPG.

I’ve found that selecting it increases the chances of my scoring an upgrade, especially at Marriott hotels. When I’ve booked the same Marriott property using the full version of the site I usually don’t get upgraded, but when I book through the app whilst selecting the option, the upgrade clears.

It gives an insight into Marriott International’s relationship with the hotel operators. Just look at th wording “request upgrade, please”. Wouldn’t just “request upgrade”, be enough? Why the please at the end? Do I really need to request upgrades please as a platinum premier elite plus member with over 75 nights?

It leads me to conclude that Marriott hotels will not upgrade you unless you specifically request them to do so, and the wording seems to suggest that the hotel is doing you a favour by granting you the upgrade.

    Your thoughts?

Welcome @Wes Noorani - that's fascinating. I never book via the app simply because I like using the desktop with a real keyboard where I can use all my fingers to type! I do hope Ben digs into this a little further because I'd like to hear the reasoning for this.
