Is there any deadline for cancelling an AA award ticket for travel on a partner airline? If I wanted to cancel an hour before the flight was scheduled to leave, for example, would I still be able to get all of my miles reinstated? Thanks in advance.

I don't believe there is a deadline as long as the flight has not departed. For an AA award ticket on AA you can cancel your flight and reinstate miles as long as "the ticket has not expired". I take that to mean up until T-1? (Though I would never cut it that close.) I've cancelled transatlantic awards on AA and BA within 24 hours and have never had a problem. Though the BA cancellation was years ago - not sure if the T&Cs have changed. But I don't see any: https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/redeem/award-travel/award-travel.jsp

Thanks! I am scheduled to travel to Japan via HKG on Cathay on Saturday (taking advantage of the mistake fare from New Years Eve). I wanted to book a direct JAL flight as a backup in case it looks likely that the HKG flight will be cancelled.

Good idea. If you are EXP you won't pay the reinstatement fee. Otherwise it is $150. In this case that seems like reasonable insurance to me...

And I forget that AA did update the T&C's to add that not only must the ticket not be expired but that the award has to be "canceled prior to departure". That was from Nov. 2018. Just cancel within a few hours and you should be OK.

    Still worth the insurance IMO.
