This year I waited until March to buy my AA $100 GCs using both Amex Platinum and Amex Gold. Unlike previous years, they were billed as "gift certificates" and the reimbursement benefit was not applied. Anyone else have data points on this?

I think someone else reported the same. But I believe most people had no problem.... I used $75 and $50 increments for my cards, and had no problem. They were billed as "Misc Fee".

Yeah, you may have to use smaller increments now, though Frequent Miler has reports of $100 charges working as recently as February.

I think it around early Feb this year that AA changed the way gift card purchases are coded, displaying gift card, rather than misc tax. Not much recourse, given that gift cards were technically not reimbursable by Amex. The loophole existed because AA gift cards weren't coded as gift cards.

I guess I I lucked out. I used the Amex Hilton Aspire $250 per year for 2018 and 2019 back between 12/20/18 and 01/02/2019/ . No problem. Purchased AA GCs, but kept everything below $75. Still have the Amex Gold $100 credit, but was planning on saving that just in case I wound up flying JetBlue or another airline. But I am tempted to pick AA and see if $25 goes through... if not, no big loss.
