Better options to earning and redeeming than United

Given the changes to United's Mileage Plus (both in qualifying and spending miles), it will be more difficult for many of us who fly a few long-haul flights to obtain Gold Status. Which other Star Alliance carriers would be good choices for a US resident to earn miles on United to obtain Gold Status and who have reasonable fixed mileage redemption awards? Probably it would be a preferred Star Alliance carrier.

If you want to credit your miles to UA, you won't earn status on the partner. But might be an interesting topic for a post (best *A carrier to earn status for distance flyers. @Lucky
