Can airline change my award ticket to a different flight?

    Hello,
I have a trip in December from NYC to Hong Kong and I used Alaska miles to redeem on Cathay Pacific flights. Knowing it's peak time period, I booked the flights 11 months ahead. Just now I received an email from Alaska said "Schedule change alert" and it said my flight is changed from CX845 to CX841. The original flight departs at 00:50am and new flight departs at 9:00am.

If I didn't look closely at the email content, I wouldn't have notice it at all that it's a different flight now. I went to search on Cathay website and of course, I cannot find CX845 on the date (12/12) that I am flying (it is available on the day before and after though). I wonder if it's because that flight is so full that Cathay just move award bookings? There is no explanation in the email as why the flight change.

Sorry if this email is too long to read.

Thank you and have a nice day.

I've had similar issues come up with CX awards. If you call Alaska and explain that you would prefer to change to another flight in the same class of service either during the 24 or so hour period before or after your original itinerary (even if it doesn't show up as award inventory), Alaska can contact CX and request a change. It takes up to 5 days to find out. Both times this happened to me CX granted the request

Just to add, there's no major explanation in their email because this happens all the time. Airlines change their schedules every few months and those of us who book tickets far in advance tend to be affected. As mentioned above, you should be able to move to a different flight at no charge, or if the new schedule really doesn't work for you, you're entitled to a full refund with no penalty

It could be because of this:

If the flight is canceled, there is not much they can do but move you. In these situations you can make reasonable requests for accommodations on other flights but since AS does not control CX inventory you may have limited success.
