I have the chase sapphire preferred card. I am not travelling but want to keep my ultimate rewards points. Could i downgrade and still keep the points when I do travel again? If so, what cards would i take out? thanks.

You can downgrade to either the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited card and hold on to your Ultimate Rewards points. However, you won't be able to transfer them to airlines or hotels. The only way you'll be able to use them is via the Chase shopping portal where you can spend them on travel at a rate of 1 cent per point.

If the $95 fee of the CSP is truly an issue right now then I would do that but just plan not to spend them until you can apply for the CSP again. And I would not ask to upgrade your Freedom card to a Preferred when the time comes. It's good to have both 1 or 2 Freedom cards and a Sapphire card (either Preferred or Reserve) in your wallet as that gives you several different ways to collect URs.

I believe there is also a no fee Chase Sapphire card (not Preferred, not Reserve, just Sapphire). It's not public available anymore but I *think* you are still allowed to downgrade to that and it allows you to keep your points as well.
