Industry News / Opinions Does airport lounges really need that much food?

Discussion in 'questions. answers. conversations.' started by Anand Ashok Kumar, Apr 22, 2019.

  1. Hello Ben,

Am a big fan of OMAAT but as being out of Belgium where we don't really have a big credit card culture I usually follow your airline and airport reviews which are fascinating. Just FYI I have never travelled in business class or used any airport lounge..

But main feeling I get is that there is insane amount of food variety available in airport lounges and in flights. I have seen many time in your lounge reviews that they are quite empty (even factoring in you are the first person to be inside) but still so much varieties of good and inglod quantity. I also feel airlines will stuff lot of good to ensure that their premium cabin passengers are left without their favourite good

Don't you think there is a potential for huge wastage of food? Don't you think there is a lot of savings can happen there both for the airlines and in general for the environment to be on the conservative side in terms of food preparation for both quantity and variety..just the fact that in the name of experience, insane amount of good getting washed all around the globe..

My lounge experience is generally during peak hours when there are many people visiting. Normally, what one sees is that food is getting consumed and when supplies run low, a new food is prepared and placed out for passengers. Sometimes, food runs out. The folks running the lounges know what the traffic flows are and I’m sure there isn’t high waste, just the “normal” waste typical for any restaurant style operation.
Lucky sometimes visits lounges at optimum times when traffic is low. Don’t draw the conclusion that lounges aren’t being utilized from Lucky’s photos.

Some of his posts do stay that he gets to lounges early to a mostly empty lounge but has a lengthy stay. I'd assume that food is more limited when it's early/emptier and that his food pics are taken after the lounge has filled up and when more food is brought out.

Plus, though I hate wasted food but some waste is a fact of life for buffet operations unfortunately.
