In 2018 I was able to redeem 17,500 Etihad Guest points/miles for a one way award on AA from HNL to Colombia & flew the trip. I then booked two more one way awards but ended up cancelling them and redepositing the points/miles in my account. Now the awards staff tell me that each flight on AA requires 17,500 for one way saver award travel which equates to 35,000 or 52,500 depending on routing and availability. The award chart does not specify the awards are per segment or flight, just 17,500 to travel between the USA (including Hawaii) and Colombia. Any comments or advice?

Thanks for your reply Ricky. I think their website is very clear that one way, all the way, if available, is only 17,500 but to book, I've had to call to get the res/ticket and the last few months the agents simply say, it's 17,500 per segment for off peak travel! I have not tried to book on the website as I believe that wasn't possible when I booked before!

Hey Bob, sorry I actually think I misunderstood your question originally, since I quoted the wrong part of the Etihad website. After the one-way award travel line, it says:

"For connecting routes mileage values will be calculated from origin to point of transfer to destination" which I understand to mean they charge per segment. It does seem vague if that means connecting within the same travel region or between two travel regions.

Wish I could help more! I've never booked an AA flight with Etihad points. Maybe someone who has could chime in with more details, otherwise, I'm just going by what I found on the terms & conditions.

    Good luck!
