Hyatt Free Annual Night Dilemma

I made a reservation for a Hyatt hotel using my annual free night from my Hyatt Credit Card.

It is across the country and work came up so now I can't make it but my wife still can, and she has ID with our same last name.

I called Hyatt and added her to the reservation but they said she can check in first but if I can't make it and show myself at their front desk then I will have to pay their standard rate.

If I cancel it now I have to pay a night at the standard rate since it is inside a 72 hour window. This is just a large Cali city stay. So I guess I have nothing to lose to try it out but do they really enforce this as it appears extreme to me.

    Thanks in advance!

I would be really surprised if they enforce it but stranger things have happened.

I've never had an issue adding someone to a reservation and having them check in on my behalf. I always email the hotel ahead of time to let them know to add a name, and that they'll be checking in for me since i'll arrive super late.

I've never been asked to swing by the front desk after my companion has checked in, whether I'm actually staying there or not.
