International travel with no COVID insurance coverage

Discussion in 'questions. answers. conversations.' started by Curious Canadian, Jun 18, 2020.

  1. Hi Lucky,

I wanted to know your thoughts on going on international travel during this time without travel medical insurance. I’m a Canadian considering visiting friends in California for 1-1.5 months, but haven’t found an insurance company that offers a policy covering COVID claims. We would be staying in a smaller city like Monterey where there aren’t many cases, but is it worth the risk?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

For me, I haven't looked into this much since I'm not traveling at all right now, but I'm not surprised you can't find a policy covering COVID claims. There is still too much unknown about the virus, that it makes sense the insurance companies aren't covering it. I think you'll have to make a decision based on your comfort level, knowing that insurance won't cover you.

I live just north of Monterey and I would caution you against traveling. We have a mandatory state order to wear masks but I have seen and heard mixed experiences regarding sanitation and physical distancing especially in public places like restaurants. Also cases are growing every day so as things can shift quickly you may find one location has become a hot spot virtually overnight.
But if you do visit it’s beautiful here!

I’m not sure when you’re planning to come here to California since the international borders are currently locked. As for the risk calculation, if you are in a high risk group, I’d stay hunkered down at home. If you’re worried about health care coverage, then you probably should avoid travel here anytime soon.
