    Hi,

I have around 161K krisflyer miles that are set to expire in August, 2019. I transferred these a while back from an Amex card. I assumed that having some activity on the account was good enough to prevent them from expiring and transferred 1K miles a few days ago but the expiry date did not change.

I do have plans to go to Australia at the end of the year and want to use these miles for that but availability for miles redemption is hard to find. I would hate to loose these miles and I am unsure of best to use these miles for this trip and what combinations to try. The trip outline would be to fly from San Francisco to Sydney, Sydney to Auckland and back from Auckland or the other way around from San Francisco to Auckland, Auckland to Sydney and Sydney to SFO/LAX.

Even if I can use these miles on one of the legs it would be great. Any suggestions on how I could go about this ? I am a newb at this.

Find a friend who can use them and swap so that they can fund some future travel for you? Use for United domestic flights?

I suggest you start looking now and start searching for potential flights on singaporeair.com you could fly singapore airlines with a connection at singapore from the US to major cities in Australia or even New Zealand. You could also fly United and book with singapore assuming you could find space. You could even try air new zealand. Start your search now so your miles don't expire!

Thanks Gaurav, djtech. I tried using the signapore airlines website to see if air newzealand would be available, from sfo to akl, and the website threw an error about backtracking. I did not quite understand what that meant. Is Air Newzealand an option to redeem Kris Flyer ?

Yes, both Singapore and Air NZ are members of the Star Alliance so you can use one airline's miles to fly the other airline. Air NZ is known for not being particularly generous with award space so it's possible you may not find any.

All that matters is that you book before the expiry date of your miles; you can travel afterwards (although, you may not be able to change plans afterwards). So that allows you to look up to a year out, where you might have more success with availability. Search the individual segments first (SFO to SIN, then SIN to SYD or SIN to AKL) and call an agent to book if you can’t do it through the website. Best of luck!
