Nick's trip report

Hey lucky, so I was reading Nick's trip report on his KLM world business class flight from lax to amsterdam and a lot of people have been hurt by him calling out the chinese lady buying a pen on the flight. A lot of people think that Nick specifically mentioned that the lady buying the pen was Chinese (which is totally, entirely unnecessary and bother a lot of people), and I really do not appreciate and am very disappointed for his choice of words.

Oh, for heaven's sake, "Ariel," or "Jim," or whatever name you're currently going by. Let this one go.

To be clear to everyone, this was not intended to be racist and I said nothing untoward about the woman, who was Chinese, from China. Were she Russian, I'd have said, "that Russian lady." Were she Korean, same thing. It's an adjective describing her nationality.

I don't condone racism in any form, nor would I ever write anything actually racist on this blog or in any other format. This isn't a political site, but trust me that I support social justice in everything I do. There are a number of minority groups in the U.S. whose civil rights remain in jeopardy, whose ability to walk down the street without a stop-and-frisk from the police, whose ability to marry the ones they love, whose ability to feed a family on a food stamp allowance, is in serious doubt.

Duty-Free-Gate is not about that. If you're really bothered by this and feel like this is some sort of grand social injustice, you need some major perspective.

If you have objections regarding the descriptive adjective "Chinese," I suggest you either take that up with the folks at Merriam-Webster, or you get used to being offended by nearly everything in life.

Ariel, I'm sorry you feel that way, and as Nick explained above, that wasn't his intention. Had he said "that woman," I think a lot of people would have argued he was being sexist.

Ultimately when writing trip reports the goal is to provide as much detail as possible, and I think that's what Nick was trying to do.

Sorry if you interpreted it differently, but I can assure you Nick didn't mean anything negative with it.

    Thanks for reading!
