I was reading an older OMAAT post regarding your rights if downgraded, and it made me think of a related question.

Let’s say you are flying on a paid, domestic business/first class fare, and the airline re-accommodates you on a different flight (e.g., because your original flight was canceled or you missed your connection due to a delay).

If the new flight doesn’t have the class of service for which you paid (or all seats in that cabin are full), are you entitled to the fare difference between your paid class of service and the class of service in which you were actually seated?

    Two follow-up questions:
    • Does it matter if the reason for the cancellation or delay is weather-related?
    • When calculating the fare difference, will the airline use the value of an economy ticket on the day of departure (i.e., a walk-up fare)? Depending on the available inventory, there may be little, if any, fare difference between a walk-up economy ticket and the discount business class ticket you purchased in advanced.

I had this very thing happen to me. I had a 4-segment RT domestic flight in paid F. The last leg had an equipment change to a 1-cabin RJ. I was proactively given a flight voucher though I suspect I could have asked for cash. It was all the same to me as I had no trouble using the voucher.
