Credit Cards Retired and playing the card game

Here is an area of the points/miles game nobody seems to have covered. My wife and I are retired so we have plenty of time for travel, while the retirement income is modest. So our goal is to play the game of getting as many high offer points/miles as we can and going on our travels. The only card we have loyalty with is the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, as we take full advantage of what it offers. Cards with renewal fee's are only kept if the fee is offset by a freebie, such as a free night stay at renewal. Cards with no annual fee are kept.
What would be a prudent strategy to use to keep this going year after year and assisting us with our travels? Can cards be closed and later re-opened to get with sign on bonus? What ways can the system be used to assist two old farts with their travel dreams?
