Unable to Add Qantas Leg on Alaska Award Ticket

So, I was fortunate enough to snag an award from LAX to Sydney in Qantas First Class with Alaska miles a couple weeks ago, when a few were available. I noticed that Qantas flies A330s from Sydney to Perth with availability on my dates, and called in to add the flight after a stopover in Sydney. However, the phone agents (all the way up to "Leads") were unable to add the Sydney to Perth flight without the LAX to Sydney segment downgrading to coach.

^ Anyone have experience making a similar change? They suggested I book the Sydney to Perth flight separately, and even though it's "only" 20k miles extra, I'd rather not if I can avoid it

I would keep calling back until you get an agent who can help you. (HUCA) I can't understand why they wouldn't be able to add the Sydney to Perth leg in either business or coach class if award space is available. Some AK agents, especially those on the night shift, seem more helpful in dealing with partner award bookings.

My understanding from past data points, frustrating as it is, is that when AS makes changes to a booking, award space needs to be currently available for them to rebook you. If Qantas isn't showing space in F then they may not be able to do the change. You could cancel and rebook and hope the space reappears but I wouldn't take that chance. If you have any success with HUCA please report!

Whenever I've added on segments to a partner award booking with AS, I've always been able to get the space so long as the add-on segment was available as an award booking segment. It hasn't been necessary for the space I had already booked in F to be available as if it were a new booking. I've done this for every F partner booking with AS miles I've made given that different segments become available at different times. I haven't made AS first class bookings with Qantas, but I've done it this way multiple times in F with CX, JL, BA and Emirates.

That's good to know. Definitely worth trying a couple more times then.
