United being shady with "credit"

We cancelled a mid-March trip from SFO to Europe at the last minute because... obviously. United told us we were not eligible for a refund but could receive credit for our flights, which we agreed to. Now, we are checking online for options to use the credit later this year and the United system seems to be rigged such that we cannot easily use the credit for any flight if it differs from our original airports. We are either given a message that there are no flights available, or the website quotes us an astronomical cost for a different flight that makes our credit useless (in the $10,000 range for economy). This is not quite the true definition of "credit"... more of a "maybe you can book this exact same trip later this year for a minimal fee, otherwise too bad for you" situation. Has anyone else come across this as well? Has anyone had success fighting it for actual straight up credit to be used against normally priced tickets?
