United proactively deletes boarding passes (it ruined by trip)

Discussion in 'questions. answers. conversations.' started by Daniel5436734453, Jan 13, 2020.

  1. Might be a good blog topic. I started a lively discussion on FT based on what happened to me yesterday.

In a nutshell, Untied auto-rebooked me on a later flight due to a 20 minute late inbound. But when they did that, they deleted my bp from my app. They claim this is standard practice. I would have made my flight if they didnt' leave me without a boarding pass. This was them "helping" me.

I always take a screenshot of the mobile boarding pass so even if it disappears from the app (for whatever reason), I still have it and therefore can go through security.

Hey Daniel, sorry to read what happened. As Daniel B suggests, a screenshot will at least get you through security.

Call it "belt & suspenders", but I always take a printed copy of my BP with me for international flights (for two reasons - the second being a carrier not giving credit for a flight on another). At the very least I save a .pdf copy of my 'printed' boarding pass to a documents folder on my phone.

All that said, I'd be furious if that happened to me. Sorry.

I fly maybe 20 times per year and consider myself pretty tech-savvy, and I literally have never once used a mobile boarding pass, mainly for reasons like this.

    Sorry that happened to you!

OP here (username issues). Thanks everyone. Yes, I wholeheartedly agree that screenshots are the way to go. I just happened to forget this time.

I just got an email from United fully admitting that they deleted my boarding pass. Does this strike anyone else as outrageous? I paid for a flight, checked in to the flight, and then the airline reaches into my digital wallet and deletes my boarding pass without telling me while I'm transiting. Seems insane!

The good advice here is definitely to create backups, but honestly I think this is something United should fix. Feels like they reached into my pocket and took away my boarding pass without telling me.

Are you DenverBrian on FT? Someone else used the "belt and suspenders" idiom today

Nope, just "me". And an attorney, so used to giving back-up advice to clients, hence "belt and suspenders..."
