I am looking at booking ORD to FCO via USAirways (AA mileage awards). Since my travel date is 7 months in the future I would like the option of being able to change the date and/or flights if necessary without $$ penalties. I know that one is able to change/cancel date and flights of AA mileage award tickets without $$ penalties as long as the departure and arrival airports are the same. However, I have talked to AA agents and been given two different answers to whether there is a penalty for switching date and flights of USAirways flights booked with AA mileage and whether there is a penalty if the date and/or flight switch involves switching from USAirways flights to AA flights. Thanks.

This is a tricky one, massarini. You're correct that there's no fee if the origin and destination remain the same, though there is a fee if the "type" of award is changed.

While a dumb technicality, in this case you'd be switching from an "American award" to a "partner award," and that technically would be a change of award type, and therefore would trigger the fee.

Though maybe now that the airlines are on a single operating certificate, that won't be the case for long?
