I'm trying to help someone go to from DC to Ecuador over Christmas leaving on 12/20 and returning on 1/4 (one day out of super peak on both ends.) The cheapest is ~770$ on AA but, it has long layovers (overnight) in Nashville going both directions. I am fine with the layover on the outbound but, on the return not so much. The ticket is DCA-BNA-MIA-UIO-MIA-BNA-DCA. I was wondering if I could change the MIA-BNA-DCA to one of AA's many MIA-DCA flights on the 4th and, if so how much would it be and how likely is it that the seat would be available.

Do they have status? They could always do same day standby for free ($75 if no status), and hope a seat is available.

On those dates, it is only $970 to fly Copa through Panama City (leaving from Dulles). Have you weighed the cost of a hotel in Nashville vs an extra couple hundred dollars on the flight?

Only 1 problem: it showed up as $970 on google flights but, when I went to look on Copa's website it showed the price at well over $1400

Ouch. It might be worth still buying the 1 stop flight outright. I'd imagine flying from Miami to DC, two American hubs, three days after New Years.... there won't be many empty seats. Lots of people coming home from the beach.

Is there a way to show the fare construction on Google Flights like there is on Matrix ITA? If not, see if you can replicate the cheaper price on ITA and then copy the fare construction. See if a travel agent can get you the same fare using that fare construction. Yes, they'll likely charge you a small fee but it should be less than the difference in $970 and $1400+

Or you could try bookwithmatrix if you find it on ITA.
